AfrocentricI loved this stuff. There was the late 60s/early 70s "Black and Proud" stuff, which included Afros large and small, cornrow braiding, hair beading, headwraps, shell jewelry, natural colors, daishikis, caftans, no makeup, and sandals, and then the late 80s/early 90s "Afrocentric" revival, which saw more red, black, and green used, continent of Africa motifs, dreadlocks, thick and glossy braids, and Malcolm X symbols everywhere, incongruously combined with big gold jewelry, exaggerated flattops, and big 80s shoulder pads. You even saw a lot of white people with the big X on their caps during the early 90s, and I always wondered if they knew what it stood for. I always hoped they were all conscious people who were well aware of the meaning of the letter and supported it.Gold Stars: 1 GOLD STARS: |
