Big hair was a fashion-must in the 1980’s. But how to tame hair when a pony tail holder just wasn’t big enough? Use a banana clip!

This plastic hair accessory was a big, curved piece of plastic with teeth and a hinge. Girls could pull their hair back and secure it with the banana clip so that it fell in a vertical mane – back from their face, but still plenty big. Even flat hair looked full when it banana-clipped, and it was a great compliment to the big, high hair bangs of the decade.

A banana clip was also  the inspiration for Geordi LaForge’s visor on TV’s Star Trek: The Next Generation. Not exactly it’s original purpose, but definitely another decade icon.
