Candies
The public got their first glimpse of Candie’s, when Olivia Newton John sported a sexy pair of stiletto-heeled slides in the 1978 film Grease. Designed by prominent footwear creator, Neil Cole, the shoes featured a block heel and a four-inch spike, on a sole manufactured from molded plastic. Adorned with a single band of leather (available in an endless palette of colors) the shoes could easily be slipped on and off. That, along with their particular ability to glide across the dance floor, earned them the nickname of the “disco slide.”
Looking back, it probably wasn’t the safest thing to be wearing on a dance floor, much like the lofty platform shoes of the day. But safety simply had to take a back seat to fashion, and paired with skintight spandex pants and a sequin-adorned tube top, this was a look that could kill. When it came to nursing a case of boogie fever at Studio 54, Candie’s simply had no competition in the footwear department.
The eventual demise of disco dampened the popularity of Candie’s in the decade to follow, but they didn’t throw in 1993, the product was successfully re-introduced thanks to a memorable ad campaign featuring Jenny McCarthy and Candie’s are still sold to this day. A rather sweet ending to a story about a rather seductive little shoe.
