Dr. Scholl's

Dr. William Scholl, an orthopedist, had a brilliant idea back in 1961. A sandal that you had to grip with your toes as you walked would help exercise the leg muscles. You’d get toned as you walked.

But it turned out not to matter so much whether the good doctor’s new design really helped you stay in shape. Fact is, they looked pretty snappy and soon became the hottest thing on two feet. A cloppy, shaped wooden sole and a simple but colorful leather strip with adjustable buckle turned out to be just the thing for feet that previously had to settle for sad foam rubber flip-flops in summertime. Dr. Scholl’s were cool – and they kept your feet feeling that way too, literally.

The clopping sound they made when they snapped back against the foot as the toe-grip released only increased the fun. Wearing Dr. Scholl’s made adults feel good because they were in fashion and also good for you. Kids loved them because they felt grown-up. In the 70’s it seemed they were everywhere.

During the 80’s Dr. Scholl’s lost their cool, but with the movement towards ergonomic consciousness in the 90’s, they made a comeback in fashion prints and advanced design technologies – although, thanks to classic design and little bit of nostalgia, you can still get original Dr. Scholl’s too.
