For a lovely, casual way to dress up a piece of clothing, handkerchief hems were the perfect solution. They were a bunch of pointed, soft ends of fabric attached to a hem that looked like several small handkerchiefs were sewn onto the garment. The style originated in the 30’s, and was revived in the 70’s as part of the hippie movement’s ethnic style leanings.

Taking it one step further, the handkerchief dress was made completely out of handkerchiefs. The soft, fluid look was achieved by sewing together several large silk scarves. It was both elegant and bohemian, giving a taste of the gypsy look while still being sophisticated. Cotton bandanas could be used for a more casual look. Plus, they were easy to make, with only a bunch of scarves, needle and thread.
