My 2nd cousin with her hippie hair back when...
Some of the fashion trends of the 60s were “fortunate” enough to last well into the next decade. One such fad was the style known affectionately as long hippie hair. Of course, the women of the previous decade owed their perfectly straight hair to grease buildup as a result of living the counter-culture lifestyle of Woodstock and war protests. Ever try to find a working shower at a three-day rock and roll festival? It ain’t easy.

In the 70s, personal hygiene had taken less of a backseat but that only served to make hair less manageable. Even poor Marcia Brady had to comb her hair 100 times every damn night in the hopes of achieving what had come naturally to her commune-residing, flower-wearing ancestors. Barrettes and headbands were widely used but did little to tame the wild manes that flowed freely and without regard for style. Thankfully, products such as Long and Silky would emerge, offering the conditioning help necessary to whip those locks into shape and ensure that they hung stick-straight and without a mind of their own.

At least Marcia’s fashion problems were solved. Jan, on the other hand, had more insurmountable challenges to face if she ever hoped to enjoy the groovy flower power style that exuded from her fashionable older sibling.
