Happy Days did more than just give people a reminiscent trip down Memory Lane; it gave us a happy look back on yesteryear’s fashions… which, if you were wondering, included the likes of the satin jacket.  Ever popular at the sock hop, the 70s helped this one-time “Members Only” trend come into its own.

The versatile look could be as sporty or as funky as one pleased, thanks to the help of embroidery, patches, iron-on decals and appliqués.  A love of athleticism was back in a big way throughout the decade, and the satin jacket’s easy-to-use snaps went perfectly with just about any casual outfit.  Throw on a pair of designer Sasson or Jordache jeans and the look was complete.

As time wore on, one might have suspected that the look would lose out, but for the most part, the early 80s hung onto the smooth style, pairing it with acid washed jeans and a spunky attitude.  Pop stars, like Menudo kept the look in vogue for the kids, though it wasn’t enough by the end of the decade.  The shine was over, and it was time for grunge and flannel shirts.
