MEMORIES:

Hailey Hailey remembers...
I was crazy about these when I was about 6 or 7!  More »
The sun is a rather unforgiving force upon the eyes, and sometimes sunglasses can’t quite get the job done on their own. The brim of a hat can add some protection, but hats can be cumbersome and float away with a good gust of wind. The perfect remedy is the visor, which coupled with sunglasses, provided ample protection for the face, all firmly affixed by a tight strap.

Consisting of a crescent shaped brim attached to a plastic band, the visor was a vital accessory on the tennis court, and proved to be equally useful on the beach, while boating, or anywhere else that the forehead needed some extra protection. An added benefit was that visors eliminated cases of “raccoon eyes,” the result of a day spent in the blistering sun, which mercilessly burned all areas of the face not covered by sunglasses.

Visors found much popularity in the 70s and 80s, before the baseball cap took over as the preferred, and more fashionable, protection from the suns rays. But for those who aren’t fond of caps, visors still perform just as well as they ever did. Of course, finding one adorned with rows of flashing lights, like those readily available in the disco era, might be a little daunting - but perhaps that is a fashion statement best left un-resurrected anyway.
