In the world of candy bars, Abba Zaba is certainly in a class all by itself. Consisting of an outer layer of taffy with a thin peanut butter center, Abba Zabas, in their distinctive black and white checkerboard wrapper, have been a West Coast tradition for decades and probably made more than a few dentists wealthy in the process.
The first experience with trying to eat an Abba Zaba bar is unforgettable for most. Biting down, one might expect the taffy to be soft, but it's not. As each piece is bitten into, requiring a break or stretch that seemed to last a lifetime, it would take another few moments in the mouth to bring the chewy goodness of the taffy to life. The packaging was no lie; Abba Zabas were definitely "Long-Lasting Fun!" so long as chewing (and potentially removing a filling or two) was your idea of fun. Sharing could be a sticky workout for your arm muscles unless you knew the secret. Trying to tear off a piece of an Abba Zaba bar often ended in futile frustration; it would just keep stretching, and stretching, and stretching... until your strength (or your wingspan) gave out. Not to mention, the gooey peanut butter would usually start to ooze out at some point, ready to land on clothing or anything else you didn't want peanut butter on. If a knife or a pair of scissors wasn't available, the trick was to slap the candy against a hard surface. While the break might not have been as precise, at least it was simple and quick. You and a friend could be chewing together in no time.
Finding an Abba Zaba bar can be a chore at times. They're easier to find in California, where they got their start, though very difficult to find elsewhere. Every once in a while, Abba Zabas can be found in the southeastern part of the United States, though even that's pretty rare. Those desperately seeking their favorite candy bar will often figure out where they need to go to get their favorite fix and, if nothing else, they can easily be purchased online.
Certainly it’s a candy bar deserving of induction into the Dentists Hall of Fame. But hey, you only live once and this is one tasty candy bar.
