While some may go for Plain Jane candy necklaces, those with more (ahem) refined tastes got a pleasant surprise in 1977 with the introduction of the Ring Pop.  Made by Topps, it has been one of the most popular lollipops in America since the very beginning.

Originally available in only two flavors, cherry and grape, this sticky delight stood out for boys and girls looking for a candy appropriate for their posh and debonair lifestyles.  Parents be warned!  Much like the cousin of the ring pop, the push pop, the large "jewel" on top of the ring could be transformed into the "deadliest" of weapons, sharpened to a point with just a few swipes of the tongue.  This variety of sweet weaponry appeased the spy or would-be assassin in any kid.  Today, Ring Pops are available in eleven flavors, such as classic cherry and the newer green apple and watermelon.  Some flavors are "twisted."  Blends of berries, watermelon and sherbets and creamier varieties like orange cream and strawberry ice cream having become favorites with fans of the fancy finger decorations.

With so much to choose from today, it's no wonder Topps says "the flavor's always on hand."
