Introduced in the U.K. in 1960 as Opal Fruits, the juicy, chewy confection came to the US in 1976 under the name Starburst and quickly gained popularity.  In fact, today, Starburst remain the most popular fruit chew in the United States – even if the competition didn’t have much of a chance against the wonderfully juicy treats.

Starburst found their initial following with simple flavors, such as lemon, lime, strawberry and orange.  Since then, they have added cherry to the selection and took out lime in their Original Fruit packaging, as well as a number of other flavors, from watermelon to plum, raspberry, mango and a few flavors in between.  Today, Starburst aficionados can find their favorite flavors in the form of hard candies and lollipops, chewy gummi shapes, as well as… lip gloss.

A favorite Halloween-time treat, Starburst have been the star in many a child’s eye through the last three decades.  Its continuing popularity seems to show that the fan favorite won’t soon disappear.
