Strawberry Blow Pops

For at least the last few millennia, humans have been putting sweet things on sticks.  Lollipops--usually made of honey-- were a delight first enjoyed long ago.  Ancient Egyptians, Chinese and Arabs all had versions of the confection, placed on the end of a stick for ease in eating the often gooey and sticky delights.  Of course, as we humans do, we experimented, added flavors, colors, then filled it with fun surprises inside, such as chocolate and (of course) bubble gum. 

 

Decades ago, Victor Ciccone created what we now know as the one and only Blow Pop.  You remember… the Dubble Bubble-like center surrounded by about a quarter inch of hard candy goodness.  Perhaps inspired by the Tootsie Roll Pop, the bubble-blowing lollipop originally came in basic flavors, like cherry and grape.  The line up now includes a variety of flavors, like green apple, blue raspberry as well as a number of super sour flavors. 

 

With every Blow Pop came a decision.  Some of us were guided by long-held beliefs, licking and licking until the pink bubble gum center was reached, cleared of all hard-candy remnants.  Others lived for the moment, chomping down as soon as the candy dissolved to the point we knew we could break through it.  Though the bubble gum flavor didn’t share the same fate, the Blow Pop left memories that would last, occasionally resurfacing at our convenient convenience store countertop.
