God Bless the Shamrock Shake!  More »

Shamrock shakes… they’re a beautiful green; the most beautiful green that we’ve ever seen!

The unavailability of this seasonal McDonald’s treat has caused some to question whether it should be placed on the endangered species list.  Until the early 1990s, in fact, the triple-thick Shamrock Shakes could be found just about anywhere in North America throughout the month of March, delighting those that would partake of the frosty green treat with its minty goodness.

Few restaurants went out of their way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day like McDonald’s did.  Introduced in 1970, the Shamrock Shake became an icon of the season, warranting its own mascot, Uncle O’Grimacey, who, like his nephew Grimace, has enjoyed a shake or 1,000 in his time – preferably green.  When it comes down to it, however, the Shamrock Shake was a twist on their classic vanilla shake; just add mint-extract and some food coloring and it’s good to go.

For the many who long – nay, pine – for the green delight, the memories won’t soon fade – as long as hope holds out.
