MEMORIES:
My bologna has a first name, it’s O-S-C-A-R
My bologna has a second name it's M-A-Y-E-R
Oh! I love to eat it every day
And if you ask me why, I'll say
Cause Oscar Mayer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A.
Oscar Mayer certainly wasn’t inventor of bologna, but he has had a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A for over a century, and kids haven’t stopped singing about it since. In the now-famous 1975 commercial, the Oscar Mayer Bologna Kid, who represented the happy-go-lucky, fun-loving youth of America in the 1970s, was fishing on an apparently placid lake, singing his song and eating, of course, a bologna sandwich.
Bologna has become a classic in many American households. Often accompanied with some American cheese, a little mayo, and maybe some mustard and catsup, a bologna sandwich is the perfect throwback to simpler times, when we weren’t asking for sun dried tomatoes and grilled artichoke hearts.
Today, maybe your tastes lean more toward grilled chicken or vegetarian styles. Still, it’s hard to deny the memory-making power of the simple sandwich and its famous jingle.
