Trivia:
Not long before he became the host of the popular late-night show The Tonight Show, Jay Leno was a proud spokesperson for Doritos. When he would utter those comforting words, “Go ahead, we’ll make more,” it was a sentiment that surely brought sighs of relief from the adoring fans of these crispy triangles of goodness.
Doritos, in their original form were introduced in 1962 by Frito-Lay. It would take another few years for an alternate flavor (aside from regular old corn) to find its way to the market and spice things up a bit. That flavor was Taco, and it proved to be a big hit with consumers eager for something zestier than your average Frito. Throughout the decades, many new flavors would be introduced, some of which became staples such as the now famous Nacho Cheese (1970s) and Cool Ranch (1980s) flavors.
Doritos’ fame and notoriety didn’t just come from their powerful crunch, however, it also came through a slew of ad campaigns featuring greats like Avery Schreiber (of The Muppet Show and Chico and the Man fame), Saturday Night Live alum, Chevy Chase, and, of course, the aforementioned Jay Leno. In more recent history, their ads skyrocketed the career of Ali Landry, and Doritos have even become movie stars in their own right, through product placement in movies such as Wayne’s World.
Today, Doritos come in more flavors and shapes than ever before. There are even “light” and baked versions of your favorite flavors, helping those who are conscious of what they eat feel a little better about snacking on a few corn chips. Today, flavors go from the basic Nacho Cheesier and Cooler Ranch to Salsa, Salsa Verde, Chili, Smokin’ Cheddar BBQ, and Fiery Habanero, for those willing to taunt their spice threshold.
These golden triangles of flavored crunchiness have been a part of football games, school lunch boxes, late-night movies, and just about anywhere else where a handful of snacks come in - um - handy. And should your supply run out, it really is nothing to concern yourself with. Rest assured that, at a factory somewhere, someone is certainly making more Doritos. A lot more.
