The hit movie The Apple Dumpling Gang gave rise to a sequel, following the adventures of the original film's supporting characters, two bumbling criminals played by Don Knotts and Tim Conway.

Amos and Theodore were swindlers but never really bad guys and after their run-in with three adorable children in the first movie, they had promised to go legit. When they arrive to a new town though, they are framed for a bank robbery by a team of crooks slightly smarter than Amos and Theodore (not very hard to do). The town's marshal shows up to arrest our inept ex-criminals but their gun's accidentally go off and shoot the gun right out off lawman Wooly Bill Hitchcock's hand.

With a new reputation as criminal masterminds and fast-drawing gunslingers, Amos and Theodore are in quite a mess when their donkey, Clarice, shows up with most of the stolen money in her saddlebags. The hapless duo try to return the money to the bank by swinging it over from the roof of a nearby building. That goes as well as you'd expect; the heavy bags fall in between buildings and clock Wooly Bill right on the head. This enrages the Marshal, who up to that point had a fearsome reputation, and he sets out to capture Amos and Theodore. The two saps have no choice but to join the Army and cause more mayhem at a cavalry fort.

The sequel wasn't as successful as the first movie, though the comedy team of Don Knotts and Tim Conway teamed up for two more adventures in the 80s.
