Release History:

1976 - The Amazing Dobermans
The third installment in a trilogy of movies about a pack of Dobermans that commit complicated robberies, The Amazing Dobermans turned the whole theme around. Instead of committing felonies, the Dobermans were now a force for good. The film got a boost from big-name stars like Fred Astaire, Billy Barty and Barbara Eden but of course the real heroes were the dogs.

Lucky is an undercover Treasury agent posing as a gambler who owes the mob a few thousand dollars and he's about to become acquainted with their collection techniques. Lucky for Lucky, a mysterious old man happens upon the scene of the gambler's imminent beating and directs his five Dobermans to put a stop to it. The dogs chase the mobsters away and Lucky is thankful as he can be. Lucky and his savior, Daniel (Fred Astaire), get acquainted and Lucky invites to older man to put together a dog act for the circus.

The two men hang about the big top with other performers like horse rider Justine (Barbara Eden) and Samson (Billy Barty), while Daniel makes the Dobermans run through tricks using a sound wave device. In their spare time, Lucky, Daniel and the dogs try to foil a mob plan to rob the armored car carrying the circus payroll.

Harmless and fun, The Amazing Dobermans changed the dog pack from criminals to bad guys, relying heavily on Astaire's debonair charm. It is definitely the most family-oriented movie in the trilogy, if you discount Barbara Eden skimpy riding outfit.
