Originally characters from the animated series Wacky Races, Dastardly and Muttley were the bad guys in the original program. In their own show, they were the stars, having traveled back in time to World War I in their old fashioned biplane. Their mission was to stop the American carrier pigeon, Yankee Doodle, from crossing enemy lines. Dastardly (with his long, dramatic mustache) and his sniggering dog Muttley were helped by bumbling mechanics from the Vulture Squadron, Klunk and Zilly. All of the voices were provided by actors Paul Winchell and Don Messick.

While no actual country was specifically mentioned, the bad guys here were inspired by German air force pilots of the first World War. Muttley was given a two and a half minute segment during the episode when he dreamed about being a war hero, a la Walter Mitty. And the show’s theme song, “Stop That Pigeon,” had it’s title words repeated over and over to the extent that many people just called the whole show “Stop That Pigeon.”
