Starting as a popular radio show in 1946, Sky King moved to the television airwaves on NBC in 1951, and followed the adventures of wealthy aviator Schuyler J. “Sky” King and his niece and nephew, Penny and Clipper at Arizona’s Flying Crown Ranch.

Utilizing Sky’s twin-engine Cessna, dubbed “The Songbird,” the trio would spend their time surveying the ranch, and often stumble upon various civilians that needed their help, along with various undesirables who needed to be stopped in their tracks. And whether acting as good Samaritans or as enforcers of the law, Sky King always got the job done.

Although Sky King focused on aeronautic adventures, it was still basically a cowboy show at heart; they just used an airplane in place of the horse. The chemistry between the main characters and their lofty adventures made the show an instant success as part of the Saturday morning lineup.

During its run, Sky King would be one of the few shows to eventually air on all three major networks. After a single season aired in the evenings, the show moved to ABC where it found more success running on Saturday mornings, which continued until 1955, when the show went into syndication. Finally, in 1955, CBS, realizing there was still some life in the show, moved it back into its Saturday morning lineup in 1959, where the show remained, consisting entirely of reruns, all the way until 1966.
