Doogie Howser was a genius student who graduated high school, college, and medical school before he was even out of his teens. But the good-natured kid appealed to audiences who watched his journey to adulthood, even as he worked to heal his patients.

The series starred Neil Patrick Harris as the sixteen-year-old doctor who was a second year resident at Eastman Medical Center. The unique 30-minute show combined both drama and comedy, sans a laugh track, to give it more of a weighty edge.

At the end of each episode, Doogie would write in his computer journal, reviewing that episode’s storyline and what he learned from it. Whether it was the illness of a patient, or a breakup with his girlfriend, Doogie was a guy you could relate to and empathize with, even if you didn’t work as a doctor when you were sixteen.
