If there was one thing the teens on Dawson's Creek knew how to do, it was express themselves. This cutting edge teen drama focused on the thoughts and feelings of its characters rather than fast-paced plot lines, and the result was an intelligent and compelling series that attracted both teens and young adults.

Growing up in pretty seaside town, Capeside, Massachusetts, Dawson Leery idolizes Steven Spielberg and dreams of becoming a filmmaker. He’s full of angst and overwrought emotions, which he shares liberally with his best female friend, Joey Potter. Joey, pretty full of angst herself, is starting to discover her feelings for Dawson have become romantic as they’ve grown older.

Their relationship is strained by the arrival of Jen Lindley, a pretty girl from New York who’s come to Capeside to live with her grandparents and escape the fast life she was leading in the city. They’re also joined by Pacey Witter, Dawson’s other best friend, who struggles to fit into daily high school life.

The show was developed by Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter of hot 90s teen horror films like I Know What You Did Last Summer. It aired on the new WB Network and became one of its most popular shows, drawing in the valuable teen audience. The smart script and interesting plot twists kept viewers returning week after week. It was one of the few teen shows that was able to portray a more realistic idea of the trials and tribulations of being a teenager – the unrequited crushes, the pressures regarding college and grades, the chance to find out who you really were and who you wanted to be.

The appeal of the show’s young stars was also a strength of the series. It propelled lead actors Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and James Van der Beek into movie stardom.
