Release History:
1983 - ? Nickelodeon
Based on the English comic book character, created by Steve Bright and John Geering, Bananaman followed the life of an ordinary schoolboy named Eric Twinge (Eric Wimp in the comic book) who, upon eating a banana, transforms into the yellow superhero. With the strength of twenty men (twenty BIG men) and the ability to fly, Bananaman would fight crime alongside his sidekick, Crow, and with the help of Police Chief O’Reilly (an homage to Chief O’Hara of Batman fame.)
His particular form of kryptonite was moldy bananas and his source of additional strength, fresh bananas, as he set out to not only fight crime but also impress the lovely reporter and girl of his dreams, TV reporter. Fiona. The bevy of villains faced by Bananaman included Appleman, Weatherman, Auntie, alien Nerks, Witchy Woman and the Foul Five.
Each five-minute long episode of Bananaman was chock full of zany British comedy - off-the-wall and farcical mayhem at every turn. Interspersed between episodes of Dangermouse and Inspector Gadget on Nickelodeon, it soon developed an underground kid following of its own in the States. And while its run was relatively short, three years on American television, it has enjoyed almost three decades of success as a British comic book. Long live Bananaman!
