Debuting in 1994, Spiderman: The Animated Series still revolved around Peter Parker, the college student who had the misfortune of being bitten by a radioactive spider while attending a science demonstration. He soon found himself in possession of some extraordinary abilities such as scaling buildings, inhuman strength, and a “Spider Sense” that alerted him to an impending crisis. He supplemented these powers with a pair of wrist-mounted web-shooters that he personally developed, and used them like an urban Tarzan to get around the city of New York most efficiently.
Peter made a grave error in his early years, when he viewed his power as a way to achieve celebrity-status, rather than recognize the responsibility that came with his abilities. He paid an enormous price for this mistake when he neglected to help a police officer apprehend a criminal one day. That same criminal would later kill his foster parents, Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Unable to forgive himself, he determined that, from that point on, whenever he donned his Spider-man suit, it would be for the sole purpose of keeping the citizenry safe from crime.
For longtime fans of the character, there were plenty of familiar faces around. Spider-Man matched wits with such recognizable adversaries as The Rhino, Mysterio and, of course, the eight-armed Doctor Octopus. And a popular comic book foe in recent years, The Villain, made his television debut in the series as well.
Fans of earlier incarnations were surprised to find that storylines were much more involved in the new series, and often carried out over an entire season. In fact, certain elements didn’t find resolution until a couple of seasons later. One of the most memorable events - when life and art came face to face – occurred on the final episode of the series, when Spider-Man finally got a chance to meet his real-life creator, Stan Lee. Now, there’s something you don’t often see in a cartoon. But there were plenty of things that could be said about in regard to this series. It was simply unlike any other Spider-Man offering to date.
And that unique quality paid off handsomely, as Spider-Man: The Animated Series was a certified hit. It ran for five seasons before finally ending in 1999. Fans didn’t have a lot of time to grieve, however, as the next series, Spider-Man Unlimited, was rolled out within months of this show’s departure. It’s simply impossible to keep a beloved superhero out of the spotlight for very long.
