Release History:
9/12/71 - 9/3/72 CBS
The action took place at Horrible Hall, a decidedly creepy boarding house owned by Tom Drac, his wife Hagatha and their son Frankie. Also roaming the residence were a pair of pets – Salem, the kitty and Rover, the pet dinosaur – along with the ever-mischievous Broom Hilda, a sweeping utensil with a mind of her own. Also taking up residence at Horrible Hall were a number of ghoulish tenants including the two-headed Dr. Jekyll/ Hyde, a thing-eating plant, switchboard operator Bella La Ghostly, Orville Mummy, the skeletal Napoleon Boneapart, the Wolfman, and plent of other creepy cohorts. Much like The Archies, the group was also musically inclined and would perform a tune during every show. Each week's finale borrowed from Rowan and Martin’s Laugh in, utilizing a unique version of the classic joke wall.
Although The Groovie Goolies met with an unfortunate demise in 1972, any fan of monsters can tell you that they always come back. The Goolie gang returned to the airwaves in 1975 for a year, then exhumed, er, resumed their careers in syndication as Groovie Goolies and Friends. This time around, they shared their space with Lassie’s Rescue Rangers, The New Adventures of Gilligan, The Secret Lives of Waldo Kitty, My Favorite Martians and Uncle Crock’s Block, a show they had initially replaced when they returned in 1975.
Today, the gang resides within the memories of their loyal fans, although those that would like a trip down memory lane can do so with the recently-released Groovie Gooolie Saturday Mourning Collection available on DVD.
