Shea Stadium
I remember going to the ballgames at good old Shea with my dear departed dad (even though he professed his love for the Yankees-grrrrrr) . As I got older I would go with my friends by hopping on the 7 train (50 cents!) buying our 1.50 (!) general admission seats and sneaking down to better seats. Now this was right before their mid eighties peak, so it was relatively easy to do this. I saw the Who /Clash show as a teen, and one of the most emotional games I've attended was the first game after the Twin Towers fell.
It seemed as if the spirit of the city rose up again like a veritable orange and blue phoenix through the rising sounds of the bagpipes. Diana Ross, Liza Minelli, and especially the great folks of our city were there to mourn the passing of our brethren and to celebrate our national pasttime, our country, our lives.
The Beatles, The Miracle Mets ('69 and '86),The Almost Miracle Mets('73), The Subway Series(200),The Pope, and so on have passed throughShea (with Billy Joel giving it a sendoff series of concerts in the summer of '08).
Goodbye old friend....and thanks for the memories!
