One Saturday Morning
Posted: Mon Oct 05, 2009 11:34 pm Central Time
I didn't really follow Saturday morning cartoons as a kid. I may have tuned into the WB occasionally, but I was hooked on Nick and Disney. In middle school, however, I discovered this new block called One Saturday Morning. I was instantly hooked. Like Saturday morning followers of the past, I'd be up at 6:45 waiting for the block to start, then I'd watch the entire five hours. I was always disappointed when I couldn't see my weekly shows.
I remember watching Buzz Lightyear, Recess, Pepper Ann, The Weekenders, Disney's Doug, House of Mouse and Lloyd In Space among other shows. Some of these took awhile to adjust to, but I secretly grew to like them. Then along came 1 Too, which ended the magic. Eventually, ABC Kids replaced the block and wasn't the same. I did watch the FoxBox for awhile, but it wasn't as good. Once it became 4K!DS TV it was all over.
I may be the last generation of Saturday morning cartoon followers. In the last ten years, Saturday morning cartoons have plummeted as more kids are tuning into Nicktoons TV and Disney XD among other 24/7 kids channels. _________________ Oh Gloria, with hair like granite. |

Had a rare Saturday off from work a few years ago-
said I was going to have an all star saturday morning!
I planned for it- told everyone my plans- really excited about it all week
Set the alarm to get up early and everything-
Saturday came-
No prize in my cereal,
Whats up with that????
got up early for nothing- everything was sports
or like weekend editions of the Today show!
What the heck happened to the cartoons????????????
I think something finally came on, but it was something I could watch on Nick
all the time. I was so bummed out-- I was actually ready to go to work at that point.
I miss being a kid so much
I feel bad for these kids today.
they will truely never know the joy of Saturday mornings |

When I was a kid, I always anticipated Saturdays, 1SM or not. There was always SNICK. I'm asking for the SNICK shows for my birthday: AYATOTD, Clarissa, and Alex Mack. I already have Pete & Pete.
Today's kids have so little to be excited about. They have what five TV networks now? The internet has brought them so much, and digital cable has ruined the unpredictability of television through its onscreen guide. DVRs made it even easier to watch your favorite shows. Recording all my favorites would fill it up, so I reserve it for Jeopardy.
I remember when CD-ROMs were cool, and when Windows 3.1 was all the rage (no more DOS). I remember when CDs were rapidly replacing cassettes, and diskettes replaced floppies (for the record, I call the big ones floppies and the little ones diskettes). I remember when CGI was new, when Toy Story was amazing.
Just imagine today's kids trying to use diskettes or cassettes. Some probably don't know what a VCR is! They'd probably be baffled by Windows 3.1, and especially DOS! I've heard that some kids don't recognize a landline phone! Another case involved someone being unable to use a rotary phone (of course, I'm too young to remember them).
Just goes to show how technology has evolved. However, it's evolved rapidly in the last thirty years thanks to the silicon chip. _________________ Oh Gloria, with hair like granite. |

I remember one of the little fillers on One Saturday Morning was a feature called Mrs. Munger's Class, which semi-animated old elemetary school class photos with gag lines. Unfortunately, somone in the photos realized they were being used without permission of the students and/or teacher depicted, and filed suit against Disney. The feature was ultimately dropped from the show.
ABC Kids isn't so bad, but they've been stuck on the same shows for two or three years now, and seem to have only a limited number of episodes of those as well. Hannah Montana is mostly stuck in the first season, Zack & Cody maybe the first two. Where are the later episodes of That's So Raven, or maybe even Cory in the House, the continuation of the show without Raven and her pals or her mom? What about The Suite Life on Deck, the sequel to Suite Life of Z &C? Would it kill Disney to add The Wizards of Waverly Place or any other new originals to the ABC lineup, or would that ruin DVD sales for those who don't have cable or satellite? Disney even did a crossover episode with Raven, Zach & Cody, and Hannah, but only the final segment of it from Hannah Montana ever airs on ABC. C'mon, Mouse House ... even Qubo and the CBS lineup change every season. _________________ "Life moves pretty fast. Mrs. Munger's class was a family favorite...in fact we still quote it! "Mrs. Munger, the twins are hitting me!" "We're not twins!"
I found some clips on Youtube! "Oh for the love of Sloppy Joes and Tapioca!"

That's why I have most of my childhood faves on video. And what I don't have, I look up on YouTube. I even put commercials in. So here's how it works for me:
Get up at 8:30, find the shows I want to see. Usually it's 3 cartoons and 3 live-action (like Krofft or Filmation)
Get my sugar coated goodness going and watch at 9am in my jammies
I watch until noon, and clean my house to Saturday morning music, like Archies, Mission Magic soundtrack, Johnny Whitaker, Bugaloos, etc.
There have been times I've watched a kid on a Friday night and prepare them for my version of Saturday morning goodness. I've even had one of them impressed by the fact that I met Johnny Whitaker, after she watched Sigmund.
Keep the faith, my friend! _________________ Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional. |

I heard about a guy who would watch old VHS tapes, one with his favorite shows, and one with commercials. He was too used to commercials to even comprehend a VCR. _________________ Oh Gloria, with hair like granite. |

Uh, I think you misunderstood me. When I mentioned commercials, I meant the old retro commercials and I include them on purpose. _________________ Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional. |

I, too, react to current Saturday morning kidvid with aghast horror. I guess in a lot of ways, it is better for kids: There are at least two networks devoted exclusively to kidshows twenty-four hours a day, not to mention the wide availability of DVDs and videos for sale or rent. That's certainly better than one four or five hour block one day a week. But it's hard not to miss the ritual and the specialness of it all.
Remember the network 'Fall Saturday Morning Preview' shows from the 70's, where they'd try to hype kids up on the Friday before with clips from the new shows premiering the next day? |

Some of the 1SM cartoons were on Toon Disney for awhile (and maybe on ABC Kids), but ever since Jetix/XD came along, it's been all new programming. Will today's kids even know who Mickey Mouse is? _________________ Oh Gloria, with hair like granite. |

Hardygirl, I like the way you think!
This is something that I would do but unfortunately I have to work on Saturday mornings. I think it's great to have one day that we can feel like a kid again. I have a bunch of cartoons on DVD and I get Boomerang so I was able to tape some that aren't on disc yet, so I can watch them.
I remember when they would have a sneak preview of the new season start on Friday nights. Those were the days. |

I too loved those Saturday Morning preview specials. My most favorites were....
The NCB 1978 special where the Bay City Rollers along wtih Witchiepoo and her ghouls introduce clips from Yogi's Space Race, Godzilla, and the New Fantastic Four.
The ABC 1982 special where Weird Al Yankovic had a party with a bunch of kids along with Scooby and Scrappy Doo and it showed clips of the new Pac Man cartoon. |

The only one I remember with Weird Al was in 1984 at Knott's Berry Farm.

I was a CPFOA (his fan club) so I watched that one. He was around in 1982, but didn't hit superstardom until 1984.
The one I remember with the kids and the party with Pac-Man was with Avery Schreiber, I believe - not Weird Al. |
