The Bullwinkle Show

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the debut of"Rocky & His Friends"on The

ABC TV Nertwork.

Every weekday afternoon...we watched our favorite animal heroic team foil

the evil deeds of"Boris Badenov","Natasha Fatale'"and their equally evil and

dangerous bosses"Fearless Leader" and"Mr.Big".

We also enjoyed the spoofs of fairy tales"Fractured Fairy Tales" and the

parodying of history"Mr.Peabody's Improbable History!".

The show only lasted a brief period of time on ABC TV..the characters returned

in 1961 on"The Bullwinkle Show"Sunday nights on NBC TV and then again in reruns

on ABC TV Sunday mornings.

And the films were reruned in national syndication for many years.

The last time that we watched"Rocky & Bullwinkle"was on "The Cartoon Network"on

Cable TV.

If any of the users of "Retroland's"TV Section have any more memories of watching

this classic series from the brilliant minds of Messers:Jay Ward And Bill Scott and their

staff?

Please share them with all of us here at "Retroland's"TV Section..and to "Rocky & Bullwinkle"

and their friends(Except for Boris,Natasha,Fearless Leader and that little fink Mr.Big).

Happy Anniversary fellas!

Kevin S.Butler Formerley"Nostalgia TV!".

Re: The Bullwinkle Show

No Fair Kevin! You beat me to it.

I wanted to start a post about "Rocky and his Friends" from 1959. Honestly, I was just a baby at the time. I remember my mom setting me in front of the television and these strange images played out before me. I didn't know what I was looking at but I liked it!

"Rocky and his Friends" form some of my earliest memories of TV from 1959. And its all because of the sound track. Never, NEVER have I heard such constant laughter. The first "Rocky & Bullwinkle" had a laugh track unlike any show I've ever seen.

Sure, canned laughter is nothing new, but "Rocky and his Friends" poured it on thick. The original show had laughter in the intro and the closing. It had laughter during the bumpers and the interlude fillers. And plenty of laugh tracks for the episodes themselves.

I was totally fascinated! I was sure there were people inside the TV. My memories of the laugh track are so strong that I lost interest in the show when it changed name, network and format. By the time it became "The Bullwinkle Show" the laugh track was gone and the show always seemed "flat" to me after that.

Youtube clips of the earlier show reveal a messy, free-style drawing of characters that I find quite interesting. I kinda like the rougher look to Rocky in the first episodes, but maybe that's just me.

Those of you who have the dvd series, is it restored to its original format or did they leave out the laughter?

We have it on DVD. It's my dad's all time favorite cartoon. He has a Bullwinkle bendy figurine, and even named his amateur softball team the Bullwinkles.

Re: The Bullwinkle Show

I remember first seeing the Bullwinkle's Corner, Mr. Know it All, and Bullwinkle's We'll Be Right Back skits, on Tennessee Tuxedo.  Then later, Rocky and Bullwinkle started airing on my local network and I started learning about the actual show the moose and squirrel come from.

You left out one show - "AESOP AND SON" That still makes me laugh after all this time - kids today don't know what cartoons are.

Re: The Bullwinkle Show

My dad likes to impersonate Bullwinkle. I play Rocky. LOL

We used to have a Rocky figurine, but the tail broke off.

Re: The Bullwinkle Show

the "ROCKY & BULLWINKLE" cartoon DVD i have includes the relatively unknown BULLWINKLE puppet series as a special feature.  it's a funny batch of short skits by the majestic moose himself, but in puppet form, with the same unmistakable voice provided by BILL SCOTT.

Re: The Bullwinkle Show

One of my favorite Bullwinkle memories was where Bullwinkle was a singing waiter in a restaurant serving up ethnic food.  Boris was the customer and Bullwinkle proceeds to regale Boris with songs describing the house specialties.  The only one I could find lyrics for is a follows.

(To the melody of  " Irish Washerwoman")

The potatoes are old.

The meat is a fright.

Ev'rything leftover from Saturday night.

It's put all together

and stirred in a pot

and we tell you it's real Irish Stew that we've got.

Thanks!  Bullwinkle is on my list of must haves.  It was a rare treat featuring wonderful writing a great voice cast and a general feeling of inspired silliness.  It is sad that most of the cast has left us.  I think the only surviving Bullwinkle alum is June Foray....She's still working!  Well at least until 2008.  Still, being able to work into your '90's is an amazing feat.  Looking over her list of credits I find that that she has been a significant part of my youth (and beyond).
