Your music tastes as a kid

I was primarily raised on oldies. I spent my entire childhood listening to The Beatles, Elvis, The Temptations, and The Lovin' Spooful among other 50s/60s classics. I was introduced mildly to modern pop in middle school, but even then I was still an oldies kid.

In high school, I first transitioned into classic rock. It was then that I wanted the music of my generation, so I listened to 80s music for awhile (stupidly thinking that was my generation ).

Since then, I've developed an eclectic taste in music, from delta blues to indie, and even classical and jazz. I took a popular music class in junior college, which broadened my horizons even further.

i started with ROCK (ALICE COOPER, KISS), then discovered DISCO (DONNA SUMMER, KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND), followed in my adult years by SOUL (MOTOWN, STAX), PUNK (RAMONES, THE CLASH), classic COUNTRY (JOHNNY CASH, BUCK OWENS),  and BLUES (ALBERT COLLINS, ROBERT CRAY).   i still dig it all too.

Re: Your music tastes as a kid

My mother was a Beatles fan, so at an early age I recall hearing alot of their songs and enjoying "Yellow Submarine" and "Octopus' Garden". Since I was exposed alot to my parents' tastes as a toddler, I naturally took to some of the songs. At age 4 I could sing the Carpenters' "Top of the World" word for word.

From there on as I became more aware of popular music, I sort of went along with what I heard. In the mid to late 70's I liked disco...(yes I liked the Village People), and LOVED Jerry Rafferty's "Baker Street"..(still do).

And oddly at the same time I was into the Village People at age 9, I developed a huge taste for Van Halen...I got a copy of VHII and wore it out from overplaying it.

Early teen years and through high school, I still was into VH, but picked up on Billy Joel, Grateful Dead and alot of the stuff that I still like today as an adult.

Re: Your music tastes as a kid

hmm..they seemed to change quite a bit as i recall. when i was about 5, i didn't really have any opinion about music, but i did seem to enjoy listening to the beach boys and various top 40 artists (basically whatever my mom had the radio tuned to at the time).

when i was a few years older, i started getting into rap and hip hop (influence of my brother). that lasted well into 8th grade, largely because everyone i went to scholl with listened to it more or less.

when i was in 6th or 7th grade, i started listening to various pop artists and bands. that lasted for a few years as well.

around freshman year of high school, i began listening to rock. i was largely against it over the years, due to the fact that my only point of reference up until that time was a few lame alternative and pop rock bands out of the mid to late 90's. i began with bands like linkin park, muse, and p.o.d., and went from there. by senior year, my tastes had grown to include bands from multiple decades. when i first began college, i started becoming bored with mainstream rock and branched out to indie and progressive rock. since then i've also nurtured a taste for techno/electronica and dance.

Re: Your music tastes as a kid

I discovered indie out of curiosity, it being the latest thing and all. I've grown to like it. It's very interesting and different. I've learned that it began as a "post-punk" revival (post-punk being the British answer to new wave). Regardless, it's my generation's rock music.

However, I've felt that classic rock is long overdue for a comeback. We already have garage bands like the White Stripes and blues bands like the Black Keys, but I'm talking about a full fledged revival. I've since discovered that classic rock still exists, and not just with old fogeys playing the same music they have for forty years. There are modern bands playing classic rock, you just have to find them. In this search, I discovered that surf rock saw a minor resurgence in the early nineties.

To be perfectly honest, they haven't changed that much. I love bubble gum, pop, 70s soul, 70s AM rock and easy rock, which was pretty much what I liked as a kid.

Re: Your music tastes as a kid

As a kid, alot of R&B and pop. My love of music comes from my dad,I think. Prince,Michael Jackson,Tina Turner,Janet,Whitney, and many more. On the pop side Whitney,Paula,Debbie,Tiffany,Duran Duran, etc. Anything that was hot at the time,I loved. That really hasn't changed much, frankly.

I'm listening to all that stuff now! Today's music isn't really appealing to me.Although,I do like Mariah,Beyonce, and Norah Jones.
